I love Christmas time. I always have since earliest childhood. I also love writing songs, and Christmas has a countless number of them that are well known and so enjoyed, enduring, and listened to by millions every year. Prior to the winter holiday season in 2016, while my family and I were still living in Houston, I was moved to write a new Christmas song for us as a family to sing together, accompanied simply by my guitar, to share on video with friends and loved ones that season as a Christmas gift from us. I wanted to make it a simple musical message about how while in the midst of all that goes on at Christmas we should always keep closely within our minds and hearts the absolute greatest gift ever given to each and all of us. That gift is of course God’s own Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. He brought with Him to this earth from God His Father and ours all that we will ever need both now and endlessly. Christmas is meant to be the celebration of this miraculous demonstration of grace, joy, love and life in Christ. That’s why the very term “Christmas” starts with the word Christ. It literally means a celebration of Him as the best gift of all that has ever been given, and out of the purest love. But unlike our temporary fleeting human love, happiness or circumstantial good feelings and comforts in our difficulties, the joy of this Perfect Gift is truly and uniquely lasting.
As always, working with my gifted and dedicated son Dan to bring about a far better version of this song so it might be freely provided to all has been a real joy in itself, and I thank him and God for that. May this song be used of God now and for years to come to bless, encourage and remind many of what and Whom Christmas is truly meant to be about.
