The Story Behind “Gone But Not Forgotten”

Throughout history there is nothing new about people having thought and commented that their former days they remember were somehow much better in various identifiable ways than what has subsequently become their new realities in life. Such views are often dismissed or relegated by others to sentimental nostalgia of older folk who have an emotional bond with their earlier days and ways, or perhaps because such people simply can’t adapt very well to the various changes brought about by the many things involved in modern living. However, honestly comparing past times and conditions to the present doesn’t have to be about those factors. It can just as well be a necessary honest and objective evaluation, which rightly calls for a recovery of very valuable lost things.

I wrote this song several years ago as an expression of my own lifelong contemplations about the now all too widely abandoned and replaced values and daily realities of life experienced by me and my contemporaries who grew up in commonly conservative America during the times now called the “happy days” of the late 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Losing or replacing proven good and extremely valuable ageless things of life with less worthy or even destructive ideas and ways of living is no benefit at all to anyone. Everyone involved in any degradations of life and culture is disaffected and harmed by it. I know I’m not alone in wanting to help restore any and all of those things of life and culture which are good for people by honoring and obeying God.

So I hope you’ll enjoy this song and through it will hear a call to recapture and restore good and precious things now being replaced. If you identify at all with the message, please freely pass it on to others so they can listen and do the same.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Thinking back on days I well remember
To simpler times when my life felt so free
When sundown came we'd head on home for supper
Our parents never worried where we'd be
The doors on our old house were seldom bolted
And all who stopped on by were welcomed in
We never had to walk through metal screeners (oh no)
When folks knew right from wrong and sin was sin
[Verse 2]
Today's technologies we never missed them
And people weren't all rushing nowhere fast
It was clear to all the gender we were born with (oh yeah)
A lot's been lost we treasured in the past
[Chorus]
Now those days are gone but not forgotten
And I miss the way we lived our lives back then
And I've been looking for the time when I'll yet find them (oh yeah)
In a place where love and freedom shine again
[Verse 3]
Guns were seen around but that was normal
And most didn't want what selfish living brings
Didn't take a lot of stuff to make us happy (oh no)
When people mattered more than chasing things
Respect and honesty were taught to children
Along with charity and honor staying true
Didn't think we had a right to others' money (oh no)
We earned what we agreed for what we'd do
[Verse 4]
Back then the government was not our nanny
And laws were mostly just the golden rule
And the right to life included all the unborn (oh yeah)
Values came from home and church and school
Faith in God and public prayer were common
And we all knew the price of liberty
Well most would give their word and truly mean it (oh yeah)
Things weren't perfect no just our reality
[Chorus]
Now those days are gone but not forgotten
And I miss the way we lived our lives back then
And I've been looking for the time when I'll yet find them (oh yeah)
In a place where love and freedom shine again
In a place where love and freedom shine again
